I choose this picture because, while I did loose the race to Peter Sagan, it happened to be one of my best all time performances of my career at age 36.
Why I Coach
My passion as a coach is witnessing transformation. Watching athletes embrace both victories and setbacks to uncover their true potential goes beyond faster times or stronger legs—it’s about building confidence, resilience, and self-belief. Seeing someone emerge not just as a stronger athlete but as a more grounded and inspired person—that’s why I coach.
My Journey
Since watching Greg LeMond win the ’89 Tour de France, the bicycle has held a sacred place in my life. Whether it was road, cyclocross, mountain, or gravel—it never really mattered. I just wanted to ride. I raced them all at the highest levels, winning national collegiate titles in every discipline and representing the U.S. at the Cyclocross World Championships in 2000.
Though my heart always leaned toward the dirt, I somehow built a nearly 20-year professional career on the road—racing across Europe, North America, and the globe. I was drawn to the road not just for the speed and spectacle, but for the strategy: the nuance of positioning, the mind games in the peloton, the beautiful chaos of a five-hour race that feels more like chess at 30 mph.
One of the most formative influences on that journey was Dr. Allen Lim. I met Allen early in my career, and he became both a close friend and mentor. Through years of collaboration—some formal, some over long rides and philosophical debates—I learned how to train smarter, not just harder. VO₂ max, thresholds, watts... yes. But also mindset, motivation, and meaning.
Our conversations helped me evolve—not just as an athlete, but as a student of the sport. I became more than just a sprinter; I became a tactician, a leader, and eventually, one of the most consistent American finishers in the top-tier U.S. and international races of that era.
That long, steady transformation—from a rider chasing dreams, to a pro refining the craft, to a mentor who now helps others find their best—shaped the foundation for Coast Club Coaching. Whether you're aiming for your first podium or just trying to understand what drives you forward, I bring a unique perspective rooted in decades of experience, challenge, and growth.
Big Island Bike Tours
After a long and dedicated career spent on the road, I eventually transitioned to entrepreneurship by creating Big Island Bike Tours in Hawaii. This marked the first time I worked closely with individuals from a wide range of athletic abilities and diverse cycling backgrounds. It quickly became clear to me that my extensive experience gained from years of competitive racing provided valuable insights and support that greatly benefited our guests. As the business evolved, I found immense satisfaction in helping people achieve even the smallest cycling goals, and I witnessed firsthand how these accomplishments transformed not only their vacations but also their overall experience on the island. Now, more than a decade later, having served clients from all corners of the globe in Hawaii, I am excited to embark on a fresh chapter in my lifelong passion for cycling by founding Coast Club – a collaborative training hub designed to inspire and elevate cyclists of all levels.
Coast Club-Training Co-Lab
At Coast Club Coaching, we believe every athlete has something special within them—a unique drive, instinct, or passion—that we call the X-Factor.
It's not always easy to name, and it rarely shows up on a power meter. But when it's tapped, it changes everything. The X-Factor is what fuels late-race attacks, comebacks after setbacks, and breakthroughs that transcend just watts and speed. It’s the inner fire that turns a training plan into a transformation.
We started Coast Club Coaching to help athletes—of all backgrounds—discover, develop, and express that X-Factor.Yes, we train with data, science, and structure. But what sets us apart is the human side of coaching: the deep listening, the intuition, and the belief that growth comes from more than just hard efforts. It comes from alignment—mind, body, and mission.
Whether you're aiming to win your local crit, finish your first gravel race, or simply feel strong again on the bike, we’re here to build more than just fitness. We’re here to help you train with purpose, unlock your potential, and ride into the best version of yourself.
